How to Consider Our Poker Pot Odds

Poker pot odds are simply the probabilities of a hand to get into the pot with respect to the amount we can get from it.

If we go on betting while the poker pot odds favor us, sooner or later we would be way ahead. For instance, when we try to flip a red card over from 52 cards there's half a chance of this happening, or 1:2. If we place a wager at a bet payout of 3 to 1, we'd be paid 3 times what we bet. So, half the time, we're expecting lots of winning chances or odds, or in poker, poker pot odds.

The odds of a black card turning up also have 50-50 chance. Same payout - we get $3 for a dollar we bet. After all the 52 cards are done we'll have won $78. This has the same effect when we're talking of hole cards becoming complete poker hands. So let's consider poker pot odds. For instance, in a no-limit play with suited KQ of hearts and the flop reads Js 8h 9h.

The bet on the big blind is $0.30. Two players bet minimum post flop and calls. The pot has now around $1.95. What are the poker pot odds? The pot offers to give us almost 2 dollars if we place a bet on the big blind. In ratio, we're talking of something better than a 6 to 1 rate. Being a gambler, we want to know if our poker pot odds of winning indeed amount to something higher than a rate of 6 to 1. So far, we still hold nothing substantial for a win. By the looks of the wagers so far, we see that a strong hand is lurking somewhere and we're probably just a few steps from losing. But on second thought, the wagers are not really that big to indicate very strong hands are after us.

Completing a flush or straight makes us winner in this game, what more if we hit K or Q? We'd end up very strong, as long as no one hits a straight also with the Q. Now, what are our poker pot odds? Nine cards in the deck could do that for us and end up in a flush and 3 that would end up in a straight from somewhere else - 12 outs. So our poker pot odds are 4 to 1 with a payout of 6 to 1.

Poker pot odds are considered from different angles and with different factors.
